Diabetes and heart disease

Over 400,000 people in Singapore are living with diabetes.

Yet, many Singaporeans with diabetes don't know about their increased risk for heart diseases.

  • Diabetic patients are 2 to 4 times more likely to develop heart disease.

  • About 1 in 2 heart attack victims in Singapore have diabetes.

  • Over time, uncontrolled high blood sugar can damage blood vessels and nerves leading to the heart.

  • This can ultimately raise blood pressure levels.

  • Having diabetes can also increase the level of bad cholesterol and decrease the level of good cholesterol.

  • All these factors increase the risk for heart disease in diabetic patients.
