Diabetes and heart disease
Over 400,000 people in Singapore are living with diabetes.
Yet, many Singaporeans with diabetes don't know about their increased risk for heart diseases.
Diabetic patients are 2 to 4 times more likely to develop heart disease.
About 1 in 2 heart attack victims in Singapore have diabetes.
Over time, uncontrolled high blood sugar can damage blood vessels and nerves leading to the heart.
Having diabetes can also increase the level of bad cholesterol and decrease the level of good cholesterol.
All these factors increase the risk for heart disease in diabetic patients.
